The long-term goal of this award is to increase equitable access to biomechanics and bioengineering research. To accomplish this objective, this award seeks to assist undergraduate and graduate students from underrepresented populations (see examples below) to attend the SB3C. Specifically, this award will provide financial assistance as well as networking opportunities for each awardee.

Award Details

  • Free in-person registration to 2024 SB3C
  • Up to $500 in travel expenses (to be reimbursed following submission of receipts)
  • Network with faculty and other awardees via the 2024 SB3C Diversity Workshop

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to all undergraduate (junior or senior level) or graduate students majoring in a STEM field from an underrepresented population (see examples below)
    • Examples of underrepresented populations in STEM (not an exclusive list): African/Black Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, Native Pacific Islanders, LGBTQ+ individuals, women, people with disabilities, veterans, first generation college students, low socioeconomic status
  • Preference will be given to those who have not attended SB3C in person
  • Preference will be given to those who submitted abstracts
  • Must commit to attend 2024 SB3C and the 2024 SB3C Diversity Workshop in-person if receiving the award

How to Apply

Applicants should apply by March 1, 2024.

The following information will be required:

  • Short statements entered directly within the website (max 250 words each):
    • Describe your research, teaching, community involvement activities, and other experiences that specifically contribute to or are related with diversity, equity, and inclusion
    • Describe how attending SB3C will help you reach your academic and professional goals
  • Single pdf document containing:
    • CV/resume (2 pages max) including a list of undergraduate and graduate STEM courses taken during the Spring 2024 semester
    • Letter of support from your institution (can be from your department chair or research advisor) justifying why this award is necessary for you to attend SB3C and confirming they are committed to providing additional financial support for you to attend, if necessary.
