As the principal organizers of SB3C2022, we are excited to plan an in-person conference with the features we all love, including outstanding scientific dissemination and discussion, diversity events, networking, mentoring, and student-centered activities. Furthermore, given the success of the virtual meetings in 2020 and 2021, we look forward to providing virtual content for the 2022 meeting. As such, we are creating both in-person and virtual options to participate in SB3C2022.

As you prepare your SB3C2022 abstract submissions, please carefully consider the following:

Podium presentation preferred:
  • At this time, we expect that all podium presentations will occur in person. We are not currently planning for any virtual presentation options for podium presentations at the in-person meeting. We will reassess the situation in late spring if necessary.
  • When submitting your abstract, you will be asked whether you would like your abstract to be considered for a podium presentation.
  • If you select yes, you agree that you (or a co-author) will present the abstract in person, whether it is selected for a podium or poster presentation after abstract review.
  • Due to limited podium sessions, not all abstracts considered for podium presentation will be selected for a podium presentation.
Poster presentation only:
  • There is a “poster only” option for in-person presentation.
  • A selection of in-person or virtual poster presentation will be required at the time of abstract submission, but this can be changed via email to program@sb3c.org prior to April 15.
  • Podium presentation: We are not currently planning for any virtual presentation options for podium presentations at the in-person meeting.
    • However, we do realize that the pandemic has affected everyone differently and that podium presentations are a great career opportunity for trainees and early career faculty.
    • If you are a trainee or early career faculty with extenuating circumstances that will make attendance at the in-person meeting impossible, please email us at program@sb3c.org prior to January 31 to discuss potential virtual options.
  • Poster presentation: There is an option for virtual poster presentation only.
    • A selection of in-person or virtual poster presentation will be required at the time of abstract submission, but this can be changed via email to program@sb3c.org prior to April 15.

With the overwhelming success of the virtual ASME-BED/SB3C Student Paper Competition over the last two years, and the opportunity to include virtual content at SB3C2022, the ASME-BED Student Paper Competition Committee is pleased to announce that we will consider both virtual and in-person poster submissions at the BS- and MS-level competitions. The PhD-level competition will only include in-person podium presentations.

Whova will be used to manage virtual content again at SB3C2022. Since we will not use Gathertown this year, we will include additional virtual content features in Whova. Details for the virtual content are provided below.

  • Both in-person and virtual SB3C2022 attendees will have access to virtual content as described below.
  • No content will be live-streamed. All content will be pre-recorded or recorded at SB3C2022. This content will be available virtually during the meeting within 24 hours after the presentation.
    • Plenary and award lectures will be uploaded following the talks.
    • Podium presenters will be strongly encouraged to upload video recordings of their talks, which will be available on Whova following their live presentations.
    • Poster presenters (both in-person and virtual) will upload their posters and a lightning talk to Whova.
  • All presenters will be able to answer questions via the Whova app.
  • The Juneteenth celebration, workshops, BEDRock concert, and networking events will not be available virtually.
